The Master Cleanse Diet

What is the Master Cleanse?
Also known as the “Lemonade Diet”, is a 10 day diet created by Stanley Burroughs in the 1940s. The cleanse consists of consuming six to twelve glasses of a lemonade mixture made with lemon juice, grade-B organic maple syrup, cayenne pepper and filtered water. This cleanse has been around for some time, but has become notably more popular in recent years (especially since Beyonce announced she lost 20 lbs while on The cleanse to get in shape for her role in “Dream Girls”!) The cleanse claimed to help people detoxify and purge away toxic buildup, however, it has been mainly used for rapid, short-term weight loss.
What are the benefits of the master cleanse diet?
People who promote the cleanse diet claim there are numerous benefits associated with their approach; not all of these benefits hold up. These purported benefits include:

· Relieve symptoms of chronic health issues
· Cleanse their colons
· Lose weight quickly
· Strengthen their immune system
What are the dangers of using the master cleanse detox diet?
Since the diet does not allow for the consumption of food, it is actually a fast and not a diet. Again, while on the diet, you are only allowed to drink this lemonade drink, as well as a salt flush and a laxative tea.Starving your body of necessary calories, vitamins and minerals for an extended period of time and boiling your caloric intake down to nothing is not a healthy way to lose weight. Therefore, when you go back to consuming food again, you will regain the weight you lost and possibly more pounds because your body will add weight faster at a lower caloric intake. In addition, with the master cleanse prolonged periods of fasting can be quite taxing and can lead to permanent organ damage. Ten days is the minimum amount of time recommended for the cleanse, but a week and a half is a substantial amount of time to deprive your body of solid foods and without the appropriate amount of calories needed for the body to function at a normal level.

The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland that wraps around the windpipe and is responsible for controlling your metabolism. The main purpose of the thyroid is for hormone release to control our metabolism. It is vital to have the right balance of hormone levels because when your hormone levels dip too low, your body will burn less energy. When you engage in a regime like this, deprivation causes the thyroid to slow down in hopes of saving energy, causing a slower metabolic rate. This causes weight gain and interferes with the body’s ability to detoxify.
